Biography
Angel Barajas was born in Woodland, California. His parents are Joe and Elvira Barajas, both farm workers who harvested the fields and worked in the local factories in Woodland.
Angel Barajas, was born in Woodland, California. He is the youngest of two siblings and a proud son whose parents harvest the fields of Yolo County and worked in Woodland’s local factories. He attended Woodland public schools, earned a Bachelor of Arts in Government, from Sacramento State University and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California (USC).
Upon graduating from college in 2006, Supervisor Barajas returned to his beloved community of Woodland where he served as an Assistant Deputy to a Member of the Yolo County Board of Supervisors. During the next 8 years, Angel served as a Parks and Recreation Commissioner and School Board Member.
On June 3, 2014 Angel was elected on the Woodland City Council and served until December of 2020. He also served as Mayor from 2017-2018.
While serving on the City Council, he was instrumental in preventing the closure of the Woodland Boxing program by working with his council colleagues, staff, and community members to relocate to the Woodland Community/Senior Center. He also led and voted to fund the completion of additional farm worker housing units known as Mutual Housing, help restore and revitalize the Woodland State Theatre and downtown corridor and increase public safety efforts along with supporting the introduction of community policing into our community. In addition, Supervisor Barajas led the City of Woodland- 1st Annual Cesar Chavez Celebration Day.
In 2020, Angel ran for Yolo County Supervisor. He was elected, being the first Latino and son of farm workers from Woodland to serve on the Board. Angel immediately sprang into action by leading the effort with his Board colleagues to classify farm workers as essential workers, so they can begin receiving COVID -19 vaccinations. As a result, 90% of Yolo County Farm Workers are currently vaccinated, one of the highest in the state of CA. Furthermore, he successfully advocated for millions of dollars to rural farm working towns. -$2.5 million dollars for the future Esparto/Capay Valley Health Center, $1.6 Million dollars for the future Knights Landing Park, $200,000 for the new Esparto Pre-School, and $2 million dollars for the Future Esparto Food Hub.
In addition, Angel worked with his Board colleagues and staff to expediate road resurfacing projects in rural Yolo County, support fire districts with long term sustainability funding, support water projects, and work with nonprofits and other important stakeholders to support vital services to all residents.
